Hope Community Gardens

Hope Community Gardens

Community Gardens are central to Hope Community’s vision of community development. The gardens offer a tranquil oasis among the hustle and bustle of the vibrant East Harlem Community. Hope Community frequently uses its community garden spaces as venues for arts events and they also serve as backdrop for numerous community activities.

In 2015, with the support of Teachers College, NY Grow and Heritage Hight School, a group of students designed a water retention system that collected rain to water the plants at our Modesto Flores Garden located on Lexington Avenue. The renovation was completed due to the generosity of the West Point Cadets who volunteered their time to repaint benches, repair garden stream and spruce up the entire garden. These types of volunteer initiatives are always taking place at our gardens and are much appreciated.

The Reading Garden

With support from the national landscape firm Troy Bilt and the Council on the Environment of New York City, Hope Community gave an undeveloped site behind the Modesto “Tin” Flores Garden on Lexington Avenue and 104th Street an “extreme makeover.”  In less than a week, Troy Bilt transformed an unattended area into a tranquil, landscaped site with flowers, benches and a gazebo.  The refurbished area was designed a “Reading Garden.”

Hope Community currently owns four community gardens.
