ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Since 1968, the Hope Community, Inc. (Hope) has been dedicated to rebuilding and revitalizing the neighborhood of East Harlem. Its mission has been to create better communities and enrich the lives of the people who live and work within them, and as part of this mission, Hope seeks to rebuild the physical infrastructure of East Harlem through strengthening the neighborhood's social fabric by assisting in the growth and success of local businesses. As such, HOPE continues to foster local economic development activity that contributes to the economic vitality of the neighborhood through such place making initiatives as the Visit El Barrio campaign and El Barrio Week; by working with area merchants to provide needed workshops and resources to strengthen their businesses; as well as by providing more than 40,000 square feet of affordable commercial space in 28 buildings throughout East Harlem that support 39 small businesses and social service agencies.
